I have always been a person that avoids riding the most current trend of the society. When people adore windows office, I adore open office (yes, I was one of those who celebrated when MINDEF decided to use the free software, but alas, the updates were not managed well..). When people adore iMac, I adore DELL/Alienware. When people adore iPhone, I adore Samsung. Similarly, for my children, they don't go to Lorna Whiston, Julia Gabriel, Learning Lab etc. But I must admit they have all gone for Kindemusik, Growing up Gifted and most recently my eldest son had enrolled into abacus (another good option is number bonding by iBrainMaths). And yes, I have never thought about my children primary education cause I am sure any decent neighbourhood school will be good enough. Well, the actual reason is that I was against the reason for volunteer work to qualify for Phase 2B.
It was two years ago, I was sharing the above with one of my churchmates and she reminded me that I could qualify for Phase 2B with church affliation.OK, it is with God's grace, this is given. I will take that chance.
This year I went through Phase 2B - Fairfield Methodist Primary School. I called it my Bonus School. I was all excited as I am glad that my son will be going through a God-centric school environment. This is the only reason why I think the school is good (I was not even bother about the academics performance, and the CCA that the school offers). Of course, this school turns out to be very reputable and is also rich in history. Perfect for a non-demanding mother like me. Well, this year they did not even conduct balloting for parents staying more than >2km away.
Phase 2C for Keming Primary School has always been my first choice. Reason is I have heard of it and we are within 2km. Sounds silly, but really, the power of word by mouth can not be underestimated. Well with all my luck, this year seems to be the first time Keming is conducting balloting for within 2km. I was late but early enough to hear that my Son's number is not called,Yes, we did not get into Keming Primary School. The only consolation I had is not to have sat through the whole balloting process of calling names, one by one. I was initially overwhelmed with much controlled sadness but it dawned on me that I just need to hold close to my heart what I have always believed in, nurturing starts from Home, school is not everything. And really what is so bad about my 2nd choice?
Lianhua Primary School, one of the two schools that I have attended for its Open House. The reason being I want to see my last choice school, how are the children as compared to a more reputable school that I have been to? In that short 1.5 hours, the distinct difference I had observed is that in Lianhua you can feel the mutual respect and the close relationship that teachers and students have. They are all polite, friendly and approachable. They take intiative to interact with parents like me, and is able to hold a decent conversation with me. In fact, I was very much "bought in" by their hearty talk about their displayed works.
In that reputable school, the student was calm and cold. But I am curious to what she was going to say about her display, I only managed to ask one question " can you share what's on your display", afterwhich..she continued with purposefully and carefully memorised description of her works. She holds no expression of interest but professionally described the works in front of her. She ended with a full stop to her answer and I ask no further. It all sounds too robotic for my comfort but she seems an intelligent girl to me, happy for her.
I like the kindred spirit of the students seen and felt in Lianhua during their Open House. I will enroll my son into Lianhua and do my best to partner the school in nurturing my son's well being.
